First Amendment
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
You may speak, publish, worship, gather, and demand answers from your government. It restrains the government — not private people. That is why MyPersonals refuses to act like a censor even though it legally could.
Second Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
The right to keep and bear arms belongs to the people. District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) confirmed it as an individual right; NYSRPA v. Bruen (2022) held that gun regulations must fit the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.
Third Amendment
No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
The government cannot move troops into your home.
Fourth Amendment
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated...
No searches of you, your home, your phone, or your data without a warrant based on probable cause, with narrow exceptions.
Fifth Amendment
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury... nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law...
You may stay silent. You cannot be tried twice for the same offense. The government cannot take your life, freedom, or property without due process.
Sixth Amendment
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury... and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
A fast, public jury trial, the right to confront witnesses, and the right to a lawyer.
Seventh Amendment
In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved...
Jury trials in civil cases too.
Eighth Amendment
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
Punishment must fit the crime. No crushing bail, no torture.
Ninth Amendment
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
This list is not the limit of your rights. Rights not written down still belong to you.
Tenth Amendment
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
The federal government only holds the powers the Constitution grants it. Everything else stays with the states and with you.
